| Funding and Sponsorship
- a brief introduction. | |||||
Sponsorship An organisation gives you some money in exchange for publicity. Their name may appear in the programme (thanks to . . . for their support), in the title of the event (The Otley Black Sheep Folk Festival), or in the venue (The Sage Gateshead) but endowments of £6m are not frequent in the folk world. Local businesses may give small amounts in return for a free mention if they think they'll benefit (pubs and restaurants are obvious examples) or you could just sell advertising space in the programme. Larger businesses may have some cash for community events, but the amounts are likely to be small. Funding An organisation gives you a grant for a specific purpose. At first sight the purpose may not be what you had in mind (booking an artist or putting on a festival). It may be for developing new audiences, increasing creativity, or promoting education in rural areas. Grants come with conditions. You need to read all conditions carefully, and phrase your application in language which will convince the funder that your event helps the funder achieve their objectives (by giving us £2,000 towards the cost of our festival you will extend participation because we will attract 500 new audience members). It's well worth browsing the whole site. Their funding system is much simpler than it used to be; start with Ambitions for the Arts at http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/aboutus/ambition.php There's a brief introduction to funding at http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/funding/index.php then plenty of detail at http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/funding/individuals.php One of the big changes in the application process is that you don't simply answer questions. There's a section where you can describe your project - this is your chance to go centre stage and really sell your project. Make sure you show what it will do to help the Arts Council meet their objectives - they've set out how they'll measure their success at http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/information/information_detail.php?browse=title&id=26&page=2 Contact details for Arts Council's Yorkshire office: http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/regions/contactus.php?rid=9 List of staff contacts: http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/documents/regions/staffYorkshire_phpY9QXcA.doc Local Authorities They may offer small amounts for community projects. Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council Private Trust Funds There are many, some with very precise criteria. Read their conditions carefully and apply only if you're sure your request meets their criteria. Many are over-subscribed, and you may have a long wait for a response.
