Tuesday 2 December

Simon writes:

A seven-piece band based in Sligo, Dervish stand alongside Altan in setting the standard for Irish music worldwide. Each of their albums has received huge acclaim from fellow musicians and critics alike, and when the organisers of the "Rock in Rio" festival were looking for a band to represent traditional "Celtic" music at the festival, they looked no further than Dervish.

The band's most recent album Spirit mixes energetic jigs and reels with Cathy Jordan's beguiling singing - most notably in her interpretation of Robert Burns' The Soldier Laddie. This variety of material takes the audience at a Dervish concert through a full range of moods, with songs to inspire both the emotions and the feet.

Support is from Uiscedwr, winners of BBC Radio 2's Young Folk Award 2002. Featuring outstanding fiddle from Anna Esslemont, who is still only 21, they are destined for a bright future.
