Ryburn 3 Step: the Next Generation

At their AGM on Thursday Feb 20th, Ryburn 3 Step elected what we believe is the youngest chair of a folk development group in the country. Alice Jones replaces Pete Coe as chair; Pete had been chair since the organisation started in 1991. Alice is eighteen, but her age does not mean that she lacks experience and involvement. She has been part of Ryburn 3 Step since she was seven, firstly as a member of the junior Longsword team, then getting involved in the step dance classes and, more recently, becoming a member of The Herb Boys and High Society ceilidh bands as piano player.

Over the last three years she has taken a more active role in organisation - programming our first Halifax Traditions Festival in 2000 and becoming a member of the committee. She has sung at the Folk Club and is an essential participant at all our Barn Dances - when she is not one of the band. She now teaches the Longsword and the Appalachian step classes - both at our regular weekly meetings and at festivals including Sidmouth, Bromyard, Chippenham, Cheltenham, Dartmoor, Bridgnorth, Broadstairs, Both Sides of the Tweed and Chester.

Alice's mother Pauline Jones was also elected vice-chair, with Linda Kemp re-elected as treasurer, Liz Abbot re-elected as secretary and Sue Coe re-elected as publicity/funding officer.
