Singers Looking for Groups Looking for Singers

Most of the choirs listed at our Community Choirs page welcome new members, but you may not live near them, or you may prefer to sing with just a small group. It can sometimes be difficult to find like-minded people, so Primrose Music has set up an online message board that may be just what you need. It's very new just now, but (like our own Event conflict calendar) the more people who use it, the more useful it will become. You can find the board at http://homepage.mac.com/gillylal/board.html

Update: the board has now been closed.

Silsden Singers: Hearts of Coal

In early spring of 2005, in order to mark the twentieth anniversary of the end of Miners' Strike, the Silsden Singers are planning a production of Hearts of Coal, a musical memoir of the coal industry created by Georgina Boyes, which requires the participation of a choir.

The lead artists for the production will be Barry Coope, Fi Fraser, Georgina and Jim Boyes and Ray Hearne, with Janet Russell leading the choir. The format will be one of narrative items, set pieces and choir songs.

The plan is for two (possibly three) performances in early March, with two rehearsal weekends on January 29/30 and February 26/27 with a final dress rehearsal on Thursday 3rd March. Participants will be asked to pay a minimal fee for the rehearsal weekends. Rehearsals and performances will take place in or around the Otley / Ilkley / Silsden area.

Anyone who is interested in taking part can find more details and contact info at: http://www.jimlawton.info/heartsofcoal

BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2004

Photo: Rockingham Arms, Wentworth The results of the annual awards have just been announced. Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire get fewer direct scores than last year, but we haven't done too badly.

Best Duo award goes to John Spiers & Jon Boden; not exactly local boys, but they are members of the Eliza Carthy Band, so there's a good Yorkshire connection there even if I did have to stretch definitions a little.

Martin Simpson, Musician of the Year, is from Scunthorpe.

Dave Swarbrick (Lifetime Achievement award) was born in London but spent the first eight years of his life in Yorkshire. We all know how important and formative those early years are.

The Folk Club award, though, goes to the Rockingham Arms at Wentworth in South Yorkshire. No need to make tenuous connections there! Congratulations to Rob Shaw and the team for a well-deserved plaudit. This award is voted on by performers, incidentally, so there's no question of local chauvinism; just recognition of a good job well done.

Kate Rusby on Radio 2 "A" list

Photo: Kate Rusby. Link to website Congratulations to Barnsley songstress and YFA patron Kate Rusby, whose song Underneath the Stars has recently made the official BBC Radio 2 playlist. This is quite an achievement for someone who is proud to call herself a folk singer, and it's good to see such an effective ambassador for the music gaining mainstream recognition.

New Year's Honours

Photo: Bob Copper. Link to website We're pleased to see a well-deserved MBE awarded in this year's list to Bob Copper, patriarch of the Copper Family and custodian of a centuries-old family singing tradition. He lives in Rottingdean in Sussex, of course, not Yorkshire, but that can't be helped! Congratulations, Bob, and a happy 89th birthday (6 January).
