Yorkshire Scores at the BBC

The winners of this year's BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards were announced on Monday 10th February at a ceremony later broadcast on a special edition of Mike Harding's programme. Eliza Carthy picked up the Best Traditional Song, Best Album and Folk Singer of the Year prizes, while Roy Bailey and Tony Benn received the Best Live Act award. John McCusker (now living in Barnsley with his wife Kate Rusby) is Musician of the Year, and Nancy Kerr and James Fagan (former Sheffield residents) are Best Duo. The Licensing Bill was not forgotten. A number of those present made a point of commenting on it, to appropriate boos and hisses from the assembly.

New Year's Honours

We're pleased to see MBEs awarded in this year's list to two notable workers in the folk arts in Yorkshire; YFA patron Norma Waterson (services to the music industry) and Cyril Swales (services to folk dance in North Yorkshire). Congratulations to them both.
